What springs to Mind?
What springs to Mind?As far as this small-scale work (clay, 60cm x 60cm) from 2016 is concerned, I will not - as I have previously done - provide information about the process and where I was coming from. This is not only because I think that it speaks for itself, but also because I am really interested in what kind of thoughts, feelings and emotions it generates? I am therefore inviting you to comment on this work and share your responses to it. … and maybe later, I will add my own ideas....
Bronze Sculpture
Bronze SculptureI have always been in awe of the art of Ancient Egypt. The artists of the three main periods - Old, Middle and New Kingdom- were just the greatest masters! They understood and applied the secrets of balancing force, movement and direction in their work. Likewise, the artists representing Modernism, Amadeo Modigliani, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Jean Arp and others from that era have always fascinated me. However, my absolute favorite here is Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957)....
Ferro Cement
The sculptures created by Niki de St Phalle (1930-2002) have always intrigued me - the volume, colour and their lightheartedness. Apart from everything else that can be said about them, I think they are glorious fun! An especially beautiful example is the Stravinsky Fountain which she made in 1983 in collaboration with Yves Tinguely. Located next to the Centre Pompidou in Paris, it was commissioned by Pierre Boulez as a visual representation of Igor Stravinsky’s Ballet The Firebird. I have...
Working the Grid
Working the GridMy personal love affair with the Square and the Grid began on a very cold winter day in 2011/2012 while visiting Germany. The art historical context was, of course, well known to me and I had studied the works of many of those who had been infatuated with this concept before me - Malevich, Mondrian, Klee, Albers and many others. But I had never felt the urge to work along those lines myself. On that particular day, however, it hit me really hard: I got initiated and became part...
Building Materials
Outdoor Sculptures using Building MaterialsFor me, with sculpture, there has always the problem of weight, movability and, of course, durability if a piece is to be placed outside Stone, such as marble, while very beautiful and relatively easy to carve, is really heavy even if on a small scale, meaning it requires a lot of muscle and possibly facilities for lifting and shifting. The same is true for concrete, wood and most metals. In addition to issues of weight, the production of bronzes is...
Current Project
Don’t we all know it… the world is drowning in rubbish. We bury it, we burn it, we let it float out into the oceans, polluting air, soil and waterways as well as ourselves. We use and abuse valuable, perhaps limited, often toxic resources, energy and manpower in the process, yet the production of waste does not stop. Quite on the contrary, there is still hardly any item we acquire that is not wrapped up in what will end up to be rubbish of sorts. We recycle. Tyres, cans, glass or plastic...
